about

ANXIETY MAGIC is the debut full length by chicago-based electronic musician ELLIOT REED, whose brutalist take on various strains of dance and pop music bring them more in line with noise, punk and metal traditions without losing the energy and melodicism that makes "Pop" pop.

Being the culmination of years of demo releases, limited cassettes and other one-off trasnmissions, ANXIETY MAGIC expertly rides the line between melody and chaos, presenting note-perfect electro-pop jams only to tear them apart with gleeful abandon until only sheets of noise remain. The results can be anything from soothing ("Phone," "Blaze") to catchy ("New Horse," "Frozen") to appropriately anxiety-inducing (the astoundingly bracing "Triple Cup").

All of this is aided by thick, analog-heavy production that marries swirling spring reverbs to drastically over-limited house breaks; live drums to spritely drum machines; screeching guitars to throbbing synths.

On "Lost Soul New Wave," the penultimate track, all of these sounds and ideas pile upon each other until the song reaches a point of total collapse and total release. Somewhere between those two points lies the beating heart of this incredibly unique record. - Ali Jaafar
